MATT WERTHEIM

His client list includes commercial and residential property owners, seriously injured individuals in personal injury claims, and some of the best businesses and entrepreneurs in the greater Bay Area. He has advised and represented small businesses, , as well as property owners, real estate agents/brokersgeneral contractors and subcontractors.

Matt's clients are intimately involved in the process (unless of course the client wants, or prefers, a more "hands off" relationship and is only interested in the "end result"). From 2005 until 2014 Matt mediated hundreds of cases as part of the early Settlement Program for the San Francisco Superior court.  The cases Matt has helped resolve involved personal injury, real estate/contracts, employment, medical malpractice, and products liability.

In 2006 Matt began a mediation mentorship with the Honorable Daniel Weinstein, a co-founder of JAMS, so that Matt could improve upon and master the skills necessary to be a great mediator. Like other mediators Matt gets great pleasure helping other attorneys (and their clients) settle their disputes. Matt is pleased to act as a neutral and resolves 95% of the cases he mediates.

Matt received his BA degree in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley in 1982. He received his JD law degree from the University of San Francisco School of Law in 1985. He was admitted to the State Bar of California in 1986, admitted to the United States District Court, Northern District of California in 1986, admitted to the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in 1997, and the United States District Court, Eastern District in 2006.  Mr. Wertheim is a member of the San Francisco Trial Lawyers Association, a founding member of The Lawyers Club of San Francisco American Inns of Court, and a longstanding member of the Consumer Attorneys of California (CAOC).

Sometimes Matt’s proposed strategy leads to litigation, and other times to negotiated resolutions - often a combination of both. Always, the client's financial situation and the costs/benefits of filing motions, hiring experts, consultants, etc. is discussed with the client. Matt's clients are intimately involved in the process (unless of course the client wants, or prefers, a more "hands off" relationship and is only interested in the "end result").

Matt is an accomplished attorney receiving the highest possible rating from the Bay Area Legal Community - an AV rating from Martindale-Hubbell. He is a trusted advisor who works tirelessly to get his clients the best possible result. When not lawyering or mediating, Matt likes hiking and biking in Marin and beyond.

Perhaps the most valuable resource for identifying a lawyer with the best reputation is a publication called Martindale-Hubbell®, which is available on the internet and in law libraries. You should only hire an attorney with an AV® Preeminent™ rating by Martindale-Hubbell®. The AV® Preeminent™ rating is the highest given by Martindale-Hubbell®. It is a rating which is based on a survey of attorneys who practiced with and against the lawyer being rated, as well as judges who know that attorney. Consequently, it is a rating which is established by an attorney's peers and is therefore a "baseline" in deciding whether to hire a particular attorney. Since 2001, Matt Wertheim has received an AV® Preeminent™ rating from Martindale-Hubbell®. This is the highest rating an attorney can have for both ethical and legal achievement.
